We supported Rocio so she could participate in the “Santiago against cancer” race. We united with runners to fight for the Spanish Association Against Cancer or Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC), for which they were able to raise 35,000 €. This is her story.

A Santiago contra el cáncer

I have been part of this beautiful adventure filled with excitement once again. Excitement that comes out of our running mates at the start of the race at the Saint Jean Pied de Port. The excitement, even if is being retransmitted from their stories, experiences and nature filled landscapes in spite of the suffocating heat, magnifies the thrill of the start.

The meet up is emotional. Their triumphant and enthusiastic faces spread excitement from the start of the adventure and together we make the journey with friends and family who have come to support this great cause from the streets of León to the city council. It´s incredible to see how little can become so much…

Friday, June 24th, the team now complete, we continue on to Santiago. The relay at six in the afternoon, the usual nervousness. Even though I´m a veteran, the nervousness continues to fuel my excitement. 15 of us set off for the Molinaseca-Ponferrada relay, 7.5 km ahead, it’s really hot but we make it. Relay completed! The day ends in Villafranca: shower, dinner courtesy of the town hall, and off to bed since the following day the adventure continues.

Saturday, June 26th, 7:45 am and the first relayers are off. I got the midday session at 2:15 pm, Samos-Sarria relay. 10 km of constant hills in a suffocating heat, although the company made it wonderfully bearable. The day continues between laughs, pictures, pilgrims exited by our journey, relay after relay that brings us closer to our final goal, Santiago de Compostela. We spend the night in Melide, a traditional dinner with octopus and good wine where we all share laughs, opinions, pains…

Sunday, June 27th, the great day has arrived, first relayers up at 7 am. Following the route, I got the O Empalme – Amenal relay, possibly one of the most beautiful due to its paths covered by lush trees providing us with shadow, a haven of peace in which the only distraction is the chirping birds.

We meet the final relayers at 12:15 pm by Monte de Gozo. Nerves, nerves and more nerves, pictures, pictures and more pictures give way to the last 5 km that keep us from Obradoiro Plaza. Altogether, a green tide made up of 70 runners on their way to our final goal and destination.

EXCITEMENT in capital letters at the entrance of the Obradoiro Plaza, tears, hugs, memories…an accumuluation of wonderful feelings that mark the end of the adventure. The goal of raising 35,000 euros met, a tiny grain of sand to give in this fight against a disease which takes more and more lives every day.

And as my t-shirt says….

TO YOU, who collaborates in this great adventure.

TO THEM, the brave who fight against this disease and, in particular, to Salva Silva who was a great fighter.

THANK YOU, EVERYBODY! See you again next year!
